Ana Fernandez – ESR7

Ana Fernández joined the EU project PROTECT – “Protecting Personal Data Amidst Big Data Innovation” – under the  Marie-Sklodowska-Curie grant in November 2019 as a PhD student. She works at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. Her PhD topic focuses on Digital Surveillance, particularly in Big Data Analytics where companies and other groups collect data from individuals to analyze their behavior and personalize websites like social networks. Her proposal focuses on how data protection regulation and technological design must respond to Big Data personalisation-technologies, and the interrelation between individual and group privacy.

She obtained a master’s degree in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, with a master’s thesis on Big Data Ethics. She became very interested in the persuasive potential of data technologies. After her studies, she joined H2020 projects, SHERPA and SIENNA, from which Ana participated in a critical study of ethical issues and guidelines for the EU in data ethics and AI. Her interest in data ethics and surveillance has been shown in her work, which characterises the importance of revising ethical and legal principles in the new technologies, especially in the use of personal data.
