Professor Asunción Gómez-Pérez of UPM was selected to be part of the Spanish Government’s Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence

The Spanish Government has set up the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council, made up of internationally renowned Spanish experts, including representatives from the scientific, economic and educational fields. Asunción Gómez-Pérez, professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and one of the most influential women in the world on Semantic Web, is part of this Council.

The main objective of this Advisory Council is to provide independent advice and recommendations on the measures to be adopted to guarantee the safe and ethical use of AI. The members of the council will analyse the implications that these disruptive technologies have in several areas, from the protection of fundamental rights, to combating discrimination or eliminating social gaps.

The council is made up of Spanish experts of the highest international prestige in the field, who will contribute to the completion and implementation of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. Among them is Asunción Gómez-Pérez, professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Doctorate at the UPM.

Asunción Gómez-Pérez, PhD in Computer Science from the Faculty of Computer Science of the UPM, is the academic director of the Master’s Degree and Doctoral programme in AI at the UPM (since 2009), as well as a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EurAsc).

She has over 20 years of international experience in the areas of ontological engineering, semantic web, linked data, multilingualism in data and knowledge management, and leads the Ontology Engineering Group (OEG) since 1995, an internationally renowned research group in these fields. Her numerous research papers have had an extraordinary impact on the Semantic Web, making her one of the most influential women in the world in this field.
